Informs the Markhams that she found a publisher in London who will publish Gerda's book, all of her poems including "An Earth Poem" and "Fate and I"; John Drinkwater would write the preface. Aaks if there is a conflict when her and his book of poems will come out at the same time; wants him to send "Song and Story."

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
